AI-Assisted Growth Control
Your culture ready on your schedule
MGM Growth Control turns a desired culture density and completion time into a coordinated growth plan. Developed with AI assistance, the algorithm recommends an initial dilution and manages temperature and mixing/aeration to bring the culture toward its target. This can shift culture preparation from an overnight scheduling challenge to a predictable morning workflow.
In an overnight E. coli demonstration, MGM reached OD600 0.500 within 1.7% of the planned 16-hour duration, with the culture in exponential growth for next-morning competent-cell preparation. The software used a lower-temperature hold with intermittent mixing, then restored 37°C and continuous mixing for the final growth phase. After a completed run, timing feedback can inform a recommended dilution adjustment for the next experiment.
AI’s contribution lies in helping develop and refine the predictive algorithms. During a run, MGM executes defined control logic using instrument measurements and programmed settings. The next opportunity is more adaptive control. For other microbes and custom strains with variable lag phases and growth rates, this could help accommodate biological differences while aiming for a defined OD at a chosen time.
Future hardware enhancements, including active cooling for lower-temperature operation, could broaden MGM’s temperature control range and provide greater flexibility for slowing growth and managing culture timing. Longer-term potential includes strain-specific learning and coordination with automated sampling or liquid handling, connecting culture readiness directly to the next experimental step.
